Overview
Hydrocephalus coming from the Greek words "hydro" meaning water and "cephalus" meaning head is the excess of water in the brain. In actuality the "water" is cerebral spinal fluid or CSF. When everything is working properly in the brain the main job of CSF is to provide nutrients and dispose of waste in certain areas of the brain. But when someone has hydrocephalus they have a blockage in the exit ventricle causing the fluid to build up in pools. In some cases hydrocephalus can be deadly but most people survive if treated, with minimal disabilities. Hydrocephalus mostly occurs in children but adults and elderly can get hydrocephalus.
